<I We You They He She It> Village School Anthems Exhibition
In the past, there had been more than a hundred village schools in the New Territories (including the outlying islands), many of which are now abandoned or transformed into other uses. Every village school has its own anthem and history – whenever the school and its surrounding environment had been changed or forgotten in the course of social changes, the village school anthem is still firmly imprinted in the memory of its alumni.
The lyrics of each anthem records the location of the village school, some of their unique rural features and the school motto. Through these lyrics, one can learn about the geographical landscape of rural villages in Hong Kong, as well as the educational expectation toward the village kids in early years.
This exhibition invites the alumni to return to the site of their village schools replay to their anthems. Drawing from the unique characters of these school anthems, the project aims to unbox an alternative dimension of the apparently ordinary but popular experience shared by most common people in their own school days, and to provoke the audiences to re-imagine and reflect the many changes in the city.
