Fragrant Village - Stories from the Northeast villages, Hong Kong
All the songs in this album are products of dialogues between Hong Kong based musicians and villagers from northeast villages namely Ping Che, Kwu Tung and Ma Shi Po. The villagers embodied stories of the past and present. The recording process was uniquely undertaken in-situ in the Northeastern New Territories, in the village courtyard, grasslands, farms cottages or even hidden corners of a bush, each songs aim was to record the sounds and voices from the land that is the home of many, now threatened by urban development.
Fragrant Village also included the school song of the Former Ping Yeung Primary School (currently abandoned and formerly the hub for a 2 weeks art festival curated by Emptyscape), a school that was built brick by brick by the students and teachers from the neighbourhood. The school ties each and every of the villagers’ life as a student and a close companion.
It is hoped that every second of sound and music in this album will take the listener on a journey, wandering in the villages, with the fragrance and beauty we hope we can share and cherish.
